1. Consultation
We walk the whole property, read the levels and the water, and tell you what is worth doing.

A drawing with every stone and plant named, and a figure against each line.
Two to three weeks3. Build
Ground and drainage first, then stone. This is the half that decides whether the rest lasts.

Most retaining walls land between $180 and $320 a square face foot, and the spread is almost entirely access and drainage rather than the stone. A wall a wheelbarrow can reach costs far less than one where everything is carried. We price per line so you can see it.
The opposite, here. A mortared wall on a footing is rigid, so when the ground heaves in February something cracks — usually the mortar. A dry-laid wall drains through itself, settles a fraction and stays standing. The two-hundred-year-old walls in this county are all dry-laid.
Two to three weeks to the drawing and price, then we book you in. Most walls and terraces are three weeks on site. If we are eight weeks out we will say so on the phone.
Yes, as long as it is stone or the ground around it — steps, a gate pier, ten feet of wall. What we will not do is turn up for something you could reasonably do yourself; we will say that on the phone and save you the visit.
Chester County fieldstone and Avondale schist from two quarries within half an hour, plus reclaimed stone off local farms when we can get it. Reclaimed is usually cheaper and looks right from day one, because it has already weathered here.
Stonework carries a five-year structural guarantee, planting two full seasons of establishment care. In twenty-three years we have rebuilt two walls. Both were on ground we had warned about and should have refused — which is why we now walk the whole property before quoting.
