Why Choose Pike & Rowan
More Than Stone.
A Garden That Holds.
We build the half nobody sees first — levels, drainage and base — because that is what decides whether the part you do see is still right in twenty years.
Set by hand, mortar-free, by the crew that quoted it.
Chosen for Pennsylvania clay, not a catalogue photograph.
Cut the steps or the planting without redoing the quote.
In the contract. Anything that does not take, we replace.

Two firms wanted to pour a footing and face it with stone. Pike & Rowan were the only ones who said the wall would last longer without one, and explained why. Four winters, not a stone moved.

They found the real problem in twenty minutes — water off the barn roof, not the grade. Fixing that cost a third of what I had been quoted to rebuild the terrace.

Second spring now. They came back twice without an invoice to replace three shrubs that did not take. Nobody told me that was in the contract.

Straight Answers
The Six Things People Actually Ask
Most retaining walls land between $180 and $320 a square face foot, and the spread is almost entirely access and drainage rather than the stone. A wall a wheelbarrow can reach costs far less than one where everything is carried. We price per line so you can see it.
The opposite, here. A mortared wall on a footing is rigid, so when the ground heaves in February something cracks — usually the mortar. A dry-laid wall drains through itself, settles a fraction and stays standing. The two-hundred-year-old walls in this county are all dry-laid.
Two to three weeks to the drawing and price, then we book you in. Most walls and terraces are three weeks on site. If we are eight weeks out we will say so on the phone.
Yes, as long as it is stone or the ground around it — steps, a gate pier, ten feet of wall. What we will not do is turn up for something you could reasonably do yourself; we will say that on the phone and save you the visit.
Chester County fieldstone and Avondale schist from two quarries within half an hour, plus reclaimed stone off local farms when we can get it. Reclaimed is usually cheaper and looks right from day one, because it has already weathered here.
Stonework carries a five-year structural guarantee, planting two full seasons of establishment care. In twenty-three years we have rebuilt two walls. Both were on ground we had warned about and should have refused — which is why we now walk the whole property before quoting.
